William “Bill” L. Harper, 87, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 15, 2018. Born in Cheraw, SC, he was a son of the late John F. Harper and Sarah Jane Chavis Harper. Bill was retired from Delta Mills where he was employed for 40 + years. After retirement he was employed by The Cheraw Chronicle, The Link Newspaper and had a lawn care business. He was a proud US Army veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. He attended Cheraw schools, but earned his GED after being drafted by the US Army. Bill was a member of Zoar United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the choir, a Sunday School teacher, and a member of Sunday School class 9. He was a member of American Legion Post 23, previously serving as Past Commander. He was awarded Legionnaire of the Year in 2005. Bill enjoyed telling his “tall tales” to anyone that would listen, he loved to make people smile and you never saw him when he wasn’t smiling. He was a family man, enjoyed helping others and always singing his favorite tunes. He could often be found “tinkering” outside.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Fannie Lee Wallace Harper of the home, a daughter, Kathy (John) Davis of Lowrys, SC, sons, Butch (Marsha) Harper of Florence, SC and Jim (Kristi) Harper of Chesterfield, SC, a sister, Betty Harper Denham of Florence, SC, grandchildren, Brent (Misty) Harper, Bryan (Ashley) Harper, Kit (Andre) Davis Scott, Evans (Kelly) Davis II, Dallas (Allison) Watson, Dalton (Mica) Harper, Ian (Aspen) Harper, Abbey (Heeth) Harding, Brad (Natalie) Newsome, Jill Crittendon and great-grandchildren, Dawson Harper, Luke Harper, Grey Harper, Montgomery Harper, Ellison Scott, Eleanor Scott, Baylor Harding, Payton Harding, Ryder Harding, Knox Harding, Noah Crittendon, Bailey Tyner, Dylan Tyner, and Jaxon Knapp.
He was preceded in death by his parents listed above, brothers, Hubert Harper and James F. Harper, sisters, Ruth Harper Thrower and Dot Harper Wallace, and a great-grandson Tag Harding.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at Kiser Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM, Sunday, November 18, 2018 at Zoar United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
