William Law

Cheraw, SC

William "Bill" A. Law , 90, left the arms of his beloved wife and went into the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, October 02, 2012.

Bill was born August 8, 1922 to Alfred and Lillie Law in Adairsville, GA, the oldest son of seven siblings.  He lived in Cheraw, SC, and for many years in Charlotte, NC.

Bill served in World War II in the Philippines as a Military Policeman for which he received many medals, one being an expert marksman.  This marksmanship carried through his life as he was an avid deer hunter and belonged to several deer hunting clubs. He also liked to fish, especially at the Outer Banks of North Carolina, go camping with Shirley, and Just travel "wherever" as long as they were together.  They were seen "always holding hands."

While living in Charlotte, he was a member of Oakhurst Baptist Church, from where he and Shirley left many friends and Bill was known for "his hugs."  It has been said that "he sure did give good ones."  Bill had such a friendly smile and gracious personality that all who met him never seemed to forget him.  Since the last of 2008 he lived in Cheraw, SC, and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, for which he got to attend a little over a year. The last 2-1/2 years, Bill was confined to his hospital bed at home with extreme dementia, never to walk again.

Surviving Bill is his best friend and love of his life, Shirley Hathcock Law. They had 42 wonderful years together.  Also surviving Bill are two daughters, Judith L. Ollis (Jim) of Newland, NC, and Carol L. Byers (Claude) of Dalton, GA, sister Jean L. Raley (Pete) of Rome, GA, brother Jimmy Joe Law (Sandra) of Grand Isle, AL,  sister-in-law Janice Law of Atlanta, GA, nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and his special little one-dog "Candy."  He was predeceased by his mother and father, son Benny Law, sisters Mary Bridges and Irene Price, brothers Larry Law and Dean Law.

Bill and Shirley were blessed with many "church family." They are Tommy Goodwin "his buddy," neighbor Barbara Robinson, sitters Betty Gainey and Deborah Pagen, and Nellie Joines, who helped take care of Bill.  Many thanks and honors go to the staff of Hospice of Chesterfield County who were there every day bathing Bill, relieving Shirley, and giving her support so that she had some time for herself, his special nurse Melissa Russell, social worker Julie Sims, and Chaplain Mark Phillips.  They were true friends and a blessing. Thanks also go to the staff of Veterans Administration Home Based Primary Care who also looked after Bill.

A celebration of Bill's life will be held 2:00 PM, Friday, October 5, 2012, at Calvary Baptist Church, 132 Calvary Lane, Cheraw, SC, (behind FATZ Restaurant) as you enter Cheraw. The family will receive friends at Calvary Baptist Church from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM before the service.  Burial will be at a later date.

Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Chesterfield County, PO Box 293, Chesterfield, SC, 27909, or Calvary Baptist Church, 134 Calvary Road, Cheraw, SC 29520, or to charity of one's choice.
