Paul "Bobby" Spears, peacefully entered into rest on September 7, 2025, at Legacy Village of Athens, at the age of 94. Born on August 19, 1931, to Juanita Leviner Spears and Jasper Spears, he was raised in Cheraw, South Carolina, alongside his late brother, JL Spears. In June 1955, Bobby married the late Carolyn Smith of Cheraw, and their partnership remained strong until her passing in 2001.

Bobby served his country with dedication, enlisting in the National Guard at just 16 years old at the encouragement of his friends. His unit was mobilized during the Korean Conflict, and he was drafted into the US Army, serving two years in Wisconsin.

After returning to Cheraw, Bobby pursued his education, earning his GED and furthering his studies at Clemson University, the University of South Carolina, and Midlands Tech in Columbia, SC. Known for his practical approach to learning, Bobby enjoyed a fulfilling career as a machinist with Becker Sand and Gravel and later made a significant impact as a woodshop teacher at Cheraw High School for 22 years. His skills were remarkable; he possessed the ability to build, repair, and fix an array of items with ease.

Bobby was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church in Cheraw, where he actively participated in the building fund committee and the budget committee. His generosity was evident when he donated a handbell set to the church. Additionally, he was a proud Mason for many years.

A sports enthusiast, Bobby took pleasure in watching football games, Westerns, Matlock episodes, and NASCAR races. He was affectionately known by his grandkids as "Ddaddy," and his visits were a highlight for them. Whether they were bowling, sharing a game of cards, playing checkers, or watching NASCAR together, these moments were cherished.

He is survived by his daughter, Susan Spears Hudson of Athens, Georgia, his three beloved grandchildren, Madisyn, Austin, and Elena Hudson and a great-granddaughter, Carlie Rose. He is also survived by three nephews and one niece.

A graveside service will be held at Old St. David’s Cemetery, Cheraw, SC, on September 12, 2025 at 1:00 PM with Rev. Joseph Kovas officiating.

Memorials may be made to either of Bobby’s favorite charities: Special Olympics, Attn: Web Gifts, 2600 Virginia Ave NW, 11th Floor, Washington, DC 20037 or Disabled American Veterans, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.
