IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Betty Margie Thomas
Pruitt
October 18, 1927 – January 30, 2026
Myrtle Beach, SC / Cheraw, SC
“For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
Betty Margie Thomas Pruitt, 98, passed away peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus on Friday, January 30th, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born October 18, 1927, in Bennettsville, SC, to the late Henry Rufus Thomas and Ann Will Knight Thomas. Along with her parents, Margie is united in passing with her husband of 73 years, James Weldon Pruitt; Baby Boy Pruitt (March 14-17, 1951); her sisters, Theodosia Earnestine Thomas Quick and Ann Gertrude Thomas; and her brother, Henry Rufus Thomas Jr.
A lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Cheraw, she faithfully taught the three-year-old Sunday School class for many years, planting seeds of faith in countless young hearts, including those of her own grandchildren.
Margie was the historian of her family, always with her camera ready to fill another photo album with the moments that became their memories. She adored her grandchildren, and they loved traveling with her whether visiting the Mills House in Charleston, exploring Atlanta or riding in Granddaddy’s many Cadillacs. She and James had a gift for hospitality, gathering family and friends for Super Bowl parties in Cheraw and creating cherished memories on countless beach trips to Surfside.
Margie’s kitchen was a place of comfort where all were welcome. Known for big breakfast spreads, she was a wonderful cook and never let anyone leave her table hungry. Outside, she tended to her garden full of vegetables and flowers including her lovely camellias. Her grandchildren have fond memories of snapping fresh-picked beans by her side.
After moving to Portside at Grande Dunes in November 2020, she found joy in bingo afternoons and meals shared with dear friends she met there, and she was blessed with dedicated caregivers whose kindness meant so much.
Even in her final days, Margie’s beauty never faded. Poised and graceful, with dark hair and bright blue eyes, she was always impeccably dressed, a reflection of the elegance she carried throughout her life.
She is survived by her devoted sons, James Weldon Pruitt, Jr. and wife, Teri of North Myrtle Beach, SC and Louis Wayne Pruitt and wife, Mica of Surfside Beach, SC; Her niece, Sandra Hicks Sowell; Her nephew, Joel Kent Pruitt; Margie’s grandchildren, James ”Jay” Weldon Pruitt III (April), Alexa “Lexi” Ann Pruitt Hitchcock (Terry), Franklin Clark Pruitt, Louis Wayne Pruitt, Jr. (Natalie), Micajah “Mikey” Caskey Pruitt (Kelly), and Katherine Thomas Pruitt Mishoe (Adam); Sandra’s children, Amy Sowell, Gregory Sowell and Chris Sowell; and Margie’s great-grandchildren, Kayleigh Noel Pruitt, James “Jayson” Weldon Pruitt IV, Ivan Louis Pruitt, Anthony Pruitt, Mary Katherine Mishoe, Caskey Adam Mishoe, Fisher Wayne Pruitt and Sandra’s grandchildren: Connor, Mills, Rhett, Stella, Rylee, Gage and Logan; and cherished members of her family, Jenifer Lyn Tucker (Ryan) (Jimmy’s stepdaughter and step grandchildren) Jackson Hamilton, Jett Hamilton, Amy Caroline Bell (Jay’s stepdaughter). Margie will also be remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins and her treasured lifelong friends and neighbors from Cheraw to the South Carolina coast with whom she remained so close.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 5th, 2026, at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens in Cheraw, SC.
The family will receive friends prior to the service at 1:30 p.m. at the cemetery.
