Margaret Anne Plettinger Mitchell
Margaret Anne Plettinger came into this world on March 13, 1960 in Sherman, TX as the first child of Will Gordon Plettinger, Jr and Lucile Stroud Plettinger. As a youngster, Margaret spent much of her time with her head in a book.
As the family moved from Texas to Mississippi to Louisiana, Iowa, Missouri and then again to Louisiana, Margaret always had a friend in her books. She graduated from Crowley High School in 1978 and ventured off to the top of a mountain to attend the University of the South in Sewanee, TN. In addition to her coursework, Margaret volunteered as an EMT with the local fire department. This did not prevent her from graduating Cum Laude with a BA in Psychology (’82). Wanting to further her education, Margaret returned to Louisiana and earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Tulane University (’83). Then off she went into the working world, putting her skills to work in several areas of vocation. While living in Charlotte, NC, Margaret met Robert B. Mitchell. The two were married September 24, 1994 at Grace Episcopal Church in St. Francisville, LA. Margaret and Bob settled in Cheraw, SC where Margaret became the Executive Director of the Chesterfield County Coordinating Council. She received the 2019 Award of Excellence from the South Carolina Office of Rural Health presented to an individual whose efforts made a notable contribution to health, healthcare, or a healthcare delivery system in rural South Carolina.
Margaret and Bob loved to travel and attended at least one Penn State and LSU football game most seasons for many years. Margaret was very active in the Episcopal Church throughout her life, but especially at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Cheraw serving on Vestry, Altar Guild, Needlepoint Committee, and as a member of Episcopal Church Women. She was an active member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served as an AARP Tax Aide and CCCC Food Share volunteer. Margaret enjoyed serving in the Jr. League in several cities where she lived. Margaret’s greatest joy, though, was family and friends and doting on her nieces and nephews. Her beautiful selfless example of servanthood life ended October 25, 2024.
Margaret is survived by her husband, Bob; father, Will; sister, Kathy Plettinger Kane (Tim); Mother-in-Law, Doris C. Mitchell; Brothers-in-Law Bradley J. Mitchell (Julie) and John C. Mitchell (Kim); Nieces and Nephews James Kane (Matt), Madeleine Andermann (Daniel), Hadley Mitchell Christiaen (Maxim), Benjamin Mitchell, and Evan Mitchell; Great Nieces Harper Andermann and Linnea Christiaen; Godchild, Erica Dupuis; and special friends Caroline Conlon and Nan Nevinskas.
Margaret was predeceased by her mother, Lucy, and her brother, Lee S. Plettinger.
Visitation will take place Saturday, November 2, 2024 at St. David’s Episcopal Church, Cheraw from 9:30am to 11:00am immediately followed by Rite of Christian Burial. Reception to follow for family and friends at The House on the Hill at Cheraw State Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Margaret may be made to Food Share Chesterfield, PO Box 648, Chesterfield, SC 29709.
