Mack Edward "Eddie" Atkinson, Jr., 55, of Hillsborough, North Carolina, passed away unexpectedly on April 15, 2026. Born on April 5, 1971, in Cheraw, South Carolina, Eddie was the son of Ann and Mack Atkinson.
Eddie graduated from Cheraw High School in 1989 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Financial Management from Clemson University in 1993. His professional journey led him to Yardi Systems, where he dedicated the last 22 years of his career. Known as a mentor and leader among his colleagues, Eddie’s hard work and kindness left an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of working alongside him.
Eddie’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by Dawn, his beloved wife and best friend of 22 years, and their three children, Laine, Luke and Will. He was a father who truly cherished his children, finding joy in their unique personalities and pride in every milestone. Dawn and his kids were his ultimate focus, and he leaves behind a legacy of love built through years of shared adventures and quiet moments at home. He was a wonderful father who cherished his children, delighted in their company, and was in love with the life he and Dawn built together.
In addition to his immediate family, Eddie is survived by his parents, Ann and Mack Atkinson of Cheraw, SC; his sisters, Hope Byles (Michael) and Ruth Sappenfield (Gary); niece, Catherine Byles (Josh Giesler); nephews, Andrew Byles, Stefan Byles, Shep Byles and Zane Woodard; parents-in-law Carol and Jack DaQuano; sister-in-law Wende Woodard; as well as many cousins who were very dear to him. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Ruth and I.S. Funderburk, and Esther and Ferrell Atkinson; Aunt, Shep Straughan; and Aunt and Uncle, Joyce and Neal Hunter.
A self-taught musician with a love for jazz, blues, and bluegrass music, he mastered multiple instruments including the piano and stand-up bass. Whether playing solo or with others, or listening to his favorites from many genres, music brought him immense joy. An avid reader with a deep appreciation for nature, Eddie loved fishing, spending time outdoors, and especially being near the coast. He found great pleasure in cooking for his loved ones and hosting family get-togethers so he could be with those he loved.
Eddie’s circle of friends was large and enduring, with many relationships stretching back a lifetime. He was the person everyone loved to be around, and a reliable confidant who offered sound, thoughtful advice without judgment. Beyond his wisdom, Eddie had a rare gift for being truly present; when you were with him, you were the center of his world, making even the simplest moments spent hanging out feel like something special.
Eddie’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. May those who mourn his passing find comfort in remembering the warmth he brought into their lives. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Lois G. McArn Food Bank, 131 2nd St, Cheraw, SC
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at Saint Matthew Catholic Community Church, 1001 Mason Rd, Durham, NC. The family will receive friends and visitors at the church beginning at 2:00 PM.
