Lloyd Mason Freeman passed away peacefully at his home on the morning of August 21, 2026. He was 92 years old.

Lloyd was born in Chesterfield County, near Patrick, South Carolina, to Geneva and Laron Freeman. He was the oldest son of eight children. He grew up in a simple country life, working on the farm and taking care of the many responsibilities he shouldered as the eldest of a large family. He was athletic and played baseball and football in high school. He graduated from Cheraw High School in the class of 1952 and went on to earn a Master’s degree in Education from Brigham Young University.

Lloyd served honorably in the United States Army for two years as a radio mechanic and loved recounting stories of his travels in Europe. Later, he served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in California and Arizona.

Lloyd loved his Church and its members and constantly sought opportunities to share his love for the Savior, Jesus Christ, and the Restoration of His gospel. He wanted those around him to “come and see.”

Lloyd had a remarkable ability to fix things. He worked consistently to keep cars running smoothly and his home in good working order. Over the years, many people reached out to him with car problems, knowing that he was always happy to share his experience and expertise. He took satisfaction in helping people find the source of a problem and solve it in the most practical and affordable way possible. His willingness to help was a gift he freely shared with family, friends, neighbors, and anyone who needed his help.

Lloyd is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Louise, and his nine children: Allison Brown, Douglas Freeman, Tonia Doussett, Julie Howard, Kathryn Gooch, Valerie Miller, Natalie Larsen, Emily Starritt, and Lauren Speirs. He is also survived by 33 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as well as four of his eight siblings: Tena Edwards, Darleen Wallace, Larry Freeman, and Craig Freeman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Laron and Geneva Freeman; his siblings, Yvonne Barefoot, Selma McLendon, Francis Mixon, and George Freeman; his uncle, Ralph Freeman, who was only eight months older than Lloyd and was more like a brother to him; and his grandchildren, Todd Austin Gooch and Kalen Victoria Jones.

Lloyd’s life was one of faith, family, learning, and perseverance. He will be remembered for his love of the Savior, his curiosity, determination, and willingness to help others. His example will continue through the generations of family and friends whose lives he touched. He will be deeply loved, greatly missed, and forever remembered.

A service to celebrate Lloyd’s life will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, August 28, 2026, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5060 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC 27609. Visitation will be held before the service from 10:00 to 10:45 am, at the church.

A graveside service will follow at 3:30 pm, Friday, August 28, 2026, at the Society Hill LDS Cemetery, 7899 Patrick Society Hill Road, Society Hill, SC 29593.
