Josephine Hopkins Gates-Coates, 91, died Sunday, March 1, 2015. Born in Cheraw, SC she was a daughter of the late Charlie Z. and Rilla Jane Thompson Hopkins. She was the widow of Douglas T. Coates. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church, Cheraw, SC and an adult choir member. She loved listening to religious music and opera. She enjoyed sewing and gardening.

Survivors are her sons, Marion (Jonna) H. Gates Jr. of Cayce, SC, Michael (Wanda) Coates of Bennettsville, SC, Glynn (Lynne) Coates of Virginia Beach, VA, a daughter, Jane (Earl) G. Pelfrey of Cheraw, SC, a sister, Janie K. Taylor of Cheraw, SC, grandchildren, Hugh Gates, Bryan Gates, Rebecca Jones, Mike Coates, Brian Coates, Chris Coates, Thomas Coates, Collyn Coates, Sheri Rogers and Karen Helms, also many great and great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband listed above, also her first husband Marion H. Gates, Sr., a son, Franklin “Frankie”  Coates, brothers, Charlie Z. Hopkins, Jr., James I. Hopkins, Bryant Hopkins, sisters, Irene Hopkins West and Lillie Maude Lowrimore.

The family will receive friends 11:00 AM to 12:00 Noon, Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

A funeral service will be held 12:00 Noon, Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC. Burial will be in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens, Cheraw, SC.
