Jimmie Legrande Teal, known to many simply as “Teal,” passed away peacefully at the age of 79 on Sunday, June 7, 2026 at his home in Wallace, South Carolina, surrounded by family.

Born September 26, 1946, Teal was a Vietnam Era veteran who served in the United States Army from October 23, 1964, to October 4, 1967. Following his military service, he worked for and retired from the South Carolina Department of Transportation after 32 years of service. His long career reflected the steady, dependable nature of a man who knew the value of work, routine, and showing up.

Teal was an avid outdoorsman with a deep love for nature. He had a quiet fascination with the world around him, especially the woods, fields, dirt roads, and traces of history hidden beneath his feet. In his younger years, he enjoyed walking old roads and open fields, often searching for arrowheads, pottery, and tools left behind by native people from generations long past. In those moments, he was fully at home outdoors, connected to the land in a way that was simple, patient, and deeply his own.

He loved dogs, fishing, westerns, military aircraft, and the kind of old stories that never really wear out. There likely was not a western made that he had not watched, and probably more than once. He also carried a deep appreciation for military service, with a genuine respect for those who wear the uniform and serve their country.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah P. Teal of Wallace; his children, Michael Ray Teal of Cheraw, Amanda B. Griggs and her husband, Andy, of Benton, Louisiana, and James P. Brock of Shreveport, Louisiana.

His legacy also lives on through his grandchildren, Sabrina Teal and Bridget Teal of Cheraw, Drew Griggs of Aurora, Colorado, and Lizzie Griggs of Ruston, Louisiana; and his great-grandson, Lucas, who gave Teal the joy of becoming a great-grandpa.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Nell P. Teal; his sister, Francis Roscoe; her husband, Billy; and his best friend, Tommy Rivers.

Services will be held on June 17, 2026, at Kiser Funeral Home in Cheraw, South Carolina. Visitation will begin at 12:00 Noon, with the funeral service to follow at 1:00 PM. Entombment will follow at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens, where military honors will be rendered.

Teal will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, his appreciation for history and nature, his respect for military service, and for the many Christmas nights on Red Hill Road, where firelight, fireworks, dogs chasing sparks, potatoes cooked in the coals, and the occasional sip of homemade muscadine grape wine warmed more than just the body.
