Eugenia "Jean" McPherson Hilliard, 81, of Cheraw, SC, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2025, at home, surrounded by her loving family.
Jean was born on September 1, 1943, in her family home on Huger Street in Cheraw, South Carolina, during a World War II air raid blackout drill. She was the daughter of the late Daniel James McPherson and Beatrice McPherson.
A lifelong resident of Cheraw, Jean was known for her warm heart, quiet strength, and enduring faith. She and her devoted husband, Dewitt Hilliard, shared 62 years of marriage, a union built on love, hard work, and deep commitment. The two met while working at Burlington Industries in Cheraw and later raised a close-knit family together.
Jean continued her career at Hardee’s and later with the Chesterfield County School District, where she was a valued and familiar presence to many students and staff.
Jean and Dewitt were long-time, faithful members of Westside Baptist Church in Cheraw, where their strong faith and dedication to their community were evident.
She is survived by her husband, Dewitt Hilliard; her daughter, Melanie Quick of Cheraw, SC; her son, Craig Hilliard of Anderson, SC; her brother, Daniel “Jimmy” McPherson of Spartanburg, SC, and two grandchildren. She is also remembered fondly by extended family and friends who cherished her kindness, wit, and steady presence.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May23, 2025 at Westside Baptist Church in Cheraw. Burial will follow at Old Saint David’s Cemetery in Cheraw, SC.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. just prior to the service on Friday at the Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Jean’s memory to Westside Baptist Church, PO BOX 1417, Cheraw, SC; or a charity of choice.
