Donita Holland Linton, 60, of Cheraw, South Carolina, passed away on March 12, 2024. Donita was born in Asheville, North Carolina in 1963 to the Reverend Max and Sue Holland. She was raised in the mountains of western North Carolina, where the family moved around due to the nature of her father’s job as a Southern Baptist minister. In 1980 she moved to Cheraw with her parents and her father took over the role of minister at Cash Baptist Church. She graduated from Cheraw High School in 1981 and studied accounting at Northeastern Technical College, then the
Chesterfield-Marlboro Technical Education Center. She was employed with Walmart, working in the cash office and rising to the title of district manager. She retired in 2000 after being diagnosed with cardiomyopathy. She later served as the cheerleading coach at Cheraw High School, having become passionate about cheerleading when her daughter was in high school. Throughout her life, Donita faced numerous medical battles from being in a coma at eighteen months of age to being diagnosed with cardiomyopathy at the age of 38, when she was told she may live only five years without a heart transplant. She was one of the first patients in South Carolina to receive a new pacemaker/defibrillator from Boston Scientific, saving her life. She was later diagnosed with lupus and had two hip replacements and several back surgeries. In 2021, she was diagnosed with stage 4 cervical cancer. She was declared cancer free in February 2022, but ultimately succumbed after a prolonged illness due in part to the damage to her body caused by the cancer treatment. She was a fighter and fought until the bitter end to stay alive for her family, and in particular, her grandson, Trey.

Donita was a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend. She loved her family, her dogs, and her granddogs. She loved cruising, Clemson football, reading, watching competitive cheerleading, and watching costume dramas. She loved the mountains and the beach in equal measures, but the mountains were her true home. She loved spending summers with her parents, siblings, children, and nieces and nephews in the mountains, picnicking at Linville Falls, looking for four leaf clovers with her father, and watching the lighting bugs from the front porch. Throughout her life, she was involved in her children’s hobbies and schooling, serving on the PTA and volunteering as often as possible. She was just as involved in the life of her grandson. She was affectionately known as “NeNe” by her nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews and was like a second mother and grandmother to them. She loved the Lord, and her faith was strong until the end. Donita’s passing will leave a void in many lives.

Donita was preceded in death by her parents, the Reverend Max and Sue Holland, and her brother, Michael Holland. She is survived by her husband, William “David” Linton of the home, children Meagan Linton MacBean (Drew) of Columbia, SC, William David Linton II of Cheraw, SC, grandson Trey Linton of Cheraw, SC, sisters Cathy Holland Adams (Tim) of Cheraw, SC, Donna Holland Gouge (Dean) of Bakersville, NC, and Connie Holland McKinney of Cheraw, SC, eight nieces and nephews, and sixteen great nieces and nephews.
