Delmas Griggs

Delmas David “Dick” Griggs, 79, died Thursday, October 10, 2013.  Born in Morven, NC, Mr. Griggs was the son of the late Elisha Eugene and Nina Elzo Spease Griggs.  He graduated with a BS degree in Business Administration from Brevard College and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.  Mr. Griggs was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving the Assistant Joint Chiefs of Staff in intelligence.  During his time of military service, he worked in an operation that thwarted an attempted assassination of Charles de Gaulle.  He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC.  In service of the church, he served on the Administrative Board, was the Building Committee chairman for the FUMC Fellowship Hall project, was a Head Usher, and a member of the Staff Pastor Parish and Finance Committees.  Mr. Griggs began his long career in retail with B.C. Moore and Sons, Inc., retiring as its Executive Vice President after 47 years of dedication and service to the company.  In retirement, Mr. Griggs enjoyed spending time with his family, working in the yard, and relaxing at his home on Holden Beach.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Martha Bulla Griggs of Cheraw, SC, a son Delmas David Griggs, Jr. (Marty Propst) of Savannah, GA, a daughter, Gini (Scott) Eddins of Cheraw, SC, a sister, Betty Huntley of Morven, NC, grandchildren, Cameron Eddins and Greer Eddins, three nephews, one niece, and brother-in-law Dr. Jeff (Reba) Bulla. Also, a special friend, Pete Owens of Cheraw, SC.

He was preceded in death by his parents listed above and a sister, Catherine G. Sowell.

The family will receive friends 3:00 PM, Sunday, October 13, 2013, in the parlor of First United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC.  A funeral service will follow at 4:00 PM at the Church.  Burial will be in St. David’s Cemetery.
