Curtis Eldridge Jones passed away on March 3. He was born on October 20, 1937, in Blenheim, South Carolina, the son of the late Arthur Joe and Viola Pope Jones.

Curtis was a graduate of Lower Marlboro High School, where at just sixteen years old he drove the school bus while also playing basketball, football, and baseball. His love of baseball continued at the University of South Carolina, where he lettered from 1957 to 1959 and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business and Accounting. Baseball remained a lifelong passion. He played on numerous local and regional teams, including the Dillon Redlegs of the Border Belt League, and later devoted eight years to coaching Dixie Youth Baseball.

In 1964, Curtis opened his accounting practice in Cheraw, beginning a career defined by integrity, discipline, and steady service to his community. He retired in 2022 after fifty-eight years in practice, having guided generations of families and businesses with quiet competence and sound judgment.

An avid golfer, Curtis spent many years playing eighteen to twenty-seven holes several times a week. In his forties, he discovered a love for skiing in the mountains of North Carolina, which he often described as “close to heaven.” As a young man, he loved farming, and throughout much of his life he maintained a prolific garden, taking pride in tending the soil until he was no longer able.

Curtis was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by the love of his life, Julia Kathryn H. Jones, his wife of sixty-two years; his sons, Curtis E. Jones II (Missy) and Joseph Harold Jones (Denise); and his cherished grandchildren, Joseph Walker Jones, Savannah Kathryn Jones, Kaitlyn Ann Jones, Curtis Eldridge Jones III, Thomas Hampton Jones, and Dalton Lee Jones. He is also survived by his niece, Carolyn Thompson Huskins, and several other nieces and nephews.

A devoted member of the Methodist Church and lifelong student of the Bible, Curtis served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher, class president, and committee member. He was also active in the community as a Jaycee, Civitan, and Rotarian. One of his greatest joys was helping those less fortunate during the holidays. He preferred to give quietly, without recognition, believing generosity spoke loudest when done in private.

Curtis cherished time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He delighted in teaching them to fish, giving tractor rides, and sharing quiet moments reading together. His steady presence, gentle humor, and faithful love will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Thursday, March 5, 2026, at Burroughs Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M. prior to the service. A private burial will take place after the service.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one choice.
