COLUMBIA - Charles Reid Jackson, Sr., retired businessman, died on Friday January 5, 2018 at his home at Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community in West Columbia, SC. Mr. Jackson was born April 15, 1937, the first of three children of Harold Dean Jackson, Sr. and Mary Charles Rivers Jackson.
Mr. Jackson grew up in Cheraw, SC. He graduated from Cheraw High School in 1955 and the University of South Carolina in 1959, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity. He served with the Air National Guard from 1959 until 1964, including a year of active duty in the United States Air Force from 1961 through 1962.
Mr. Jackson was associated with Jackson Oil Company in Cheraw for many years. He was active in industry affairs, a past president of the South Carolina Oil Marketers Association, and a former board member of the Petroleum Marketers Association of America. He was a former member of the board of directors of the South Carolina State Chamber of Commerce. Governor Richard W. Riley appointed Mr. Jackson to a term on the South Carolina State Development Board (South Carolina Department of Commerce).
Mr. Jackson was active in civic affairs in Cheraw and was a past president of Cheraw Chamber of Commerce, Cheraw Kiwanis Club, and Cheraw United Fund. He was elected mayor of Cheraw in 1973 to fill an unexpired term of Mayor Miller S. Ingram, Sr. Mr. Jackson was re-elected to a full term two years later and served as mayor until 1980.
Surviving are his wife, Coles Cathcart Jackson of Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community, West Columbia, SC, three children, a daughter, Coles Jackson Lawton and her husband, Dr. Joseph James Lawton, III of Columbia, SC, a son, Charles Reid Jackson, Jr., and his wife, Gracyn Streater Jackson, of Cheraw, SC, and a daughter, Alice Jackson Fort, and her husband, George Hamlet Tatum Fort, of Hartsville, SC and eight grandchildren: Coles Heyward Lawton, Louisa DuBose Dwight Lawton, Joseph James Lawton, IV, Charles Reid Jackson, III, Campbell Heyward Jackson, George Hamlet Tatum Fort, Jr., Alice Findley Dean Fort and Sarah Boykin Heyward Fort. Mr. Jackson is also survived by a sister, Jane Jackson Avinger and her husband, Dr. Robert L. Avinger, Jr. of Davidson, NC and a brother, Harold Dean Jackson, Jr. and his wife, Amy Generelly Jackson, of Lubec, Maine and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Monday evening, January 8th from four until six o’clock at the Guignard Mansion at Still Hopes. Memorial services for Mr. Jackson will be held on Tuesday, January 9th at three o’clock at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Columbia, SC. A graveside burial service will be held in Cheraw, SC at Old Saint David’s Episcopal Church Cemetery on Wednesday, January 10th at two o’clock.
