Cheraw - John Leroy Straughn, 85, passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at home.
He is survived by Sheppard Funderburk Straughn, his loving wife of 33 years; Laurie(daughter) and Stephen Cook; Bret (son) and Kathy Straughn; Kristen (daughter) and Mark Wittemann; Duncan (stepson) and Jan Laney, Claude (stepson) and Sandra Laney, Sarah (stepdaughter) and Danny Lee, Fowler (stepson) and Lynne Laney; grandchildren: Caroline Laney, Clair Laney, Alex Lee, Lydia Lee, Hannah Laney, Kyle Cook, Colin Cook, Caleb Nastasi, Grace Wittemann, and Luke Wittemann; Steven (nephew) and Lee Straughn; Lynn Pederson (niece); Mark (nephew) and Paula Carr; Patricia Tims (niece); Leo (nephew) and Paula Straughn; Kathy (niece) and Larry Hopkins; Tim (nephew) and Debbie Straughn; as well as many beloved family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roland and Lois Straughn; siblings: Mary Alice Straughn Tillman, George Arnold (Gene) Straughn, and Margaret Straughn Carr; Yvonne Straughn (daughter) and Kari Nastasi (granddaughter).
John was a Korean War Veteran who served as a Petty Officer Sonar Technician in the U.S. Navy for four years. He graduated Troy University in Troy, Alabama in 1957. Early in his career, he taught high school math. He went on to have a long and successful career as a Computer Programmer and Data Processing Manager. He retired from INA Bearing in 1996. John opened Professional Dry Cleaners and Laundromat in 1989. He spoke often of his profound gratitude to Roxie Grice, manager and loyal family friend. He held his employees in high regard and appreciated their dedicated service.
John enjoyed boating and woodworking, but his greatest joy was his family. He was also blessed with many friends, and he will be remembered for his big smile and his great sense of humor.
Visitation to be held at First United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC on Friday, August 18, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. Service will commence at 3:00 p.m.
